The Church of the Holy Sepulchre

The seventh station of the cross.
Amidst cries of “Hello, where are you from? Would you like a tour? Juice? Want Juice?” and a lot of buying and selling and chaos and people, I followed around the Via Dolorosa today in the Old City. I have been to that part of Jerusalem so many times now that it seems I should know my way around, but I am always immediately lost as soon as I start trying to find my way to any specific point.
Selling and buying in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City

The last couple days in Jerusalem have mostly concerned walking around and seeing important things. It turns out everyone was right: Jerusalem feels nothing like any other city I have ever seen. Max described it as “Poetic,” but I’m not quite sure if that is right. In any case, all that walking gave me a big blister on my foot, so I’m giving my feet a rest for a bit.
Today we moved in to the apartment we will be staying in in the German Colony. The German Colony may not be full of long-haired fanatics like the old city, but it’s weird in its own way, namely, its full of Americans, mostly from New York or New Jersey. This Carroll Gardens of the Middle East is far from the bazaars of the old city. There, in the old city, everything is strange, everything is holy, and everyone around is also strange and holy. Here, eveyone is normal, but they all came to Jerusalem, to the strange, holy land. It seems this city can be everything at once.
